underground new york public library

Completely enamoured of this tumblr. I love how intimate it makes the subway seem. I feel that way, often - cocooned, connected. I get more reading done on my morning commute than at any other time. I've frequently entertained the thought of just continuing to ride, past my stop, all the way up to the end of the line, wherever that might be. You know I haven't been north of 81st since I moved to New York? A day riding the lines back and forth with a book seems like a wonderful, if completely nonsensical, remedy.

Reading: Emily Nussbaum on Doctor Who in the New Yorker

Eating: Greek yogurt with rhubarb compote, agave, walnuts, and strawberries from the market

Googling: "how to wear a slip as a dress," "questions to ask at open houses"

Pondering:

Planning: Late afternoon picnic in Prospect Park with bagels, greyhounds in water bottles

Writing: Thoughts on privilege, on fetishizing the poor, on the 99%, on houses in France

Considering: How to get back to Newfoundland

also, this is the best thing to have happened recently

mostly just the shoes

Sometimes I think I'd like to start a blog that is only about the things I ate and why I ate them.

The six bites of your pad see ew on Tuesday night? That was my dinner. Because I had a vegetarian Chipotle burrito for lunch, because I recently had to switch birth control brands, because the American health care system is a joke, because 10 years ago now I wanted to leave home and go as far as I could without crossing an ocean, because I fell in love and stayed, and now I'm here, in this bar, drinking a whiskey ginger, losing at trivia, about to get a lecture from your best friend as to why I should stay away from you.

All that from pad see ew!

My coworker brought me $5 worth of rhubarb from the Union Square green market last week. I turned it into: a rhubarb buttermilk cake with cinnamon sugar topping; rhubarb lemon ginger muffins; soft rhubarb compote.

Shoes!

Brunch!

All day long I'll listen to the soundtrack of Les Mis. (This is a factory, not a circus!) Why not? There are some projects I'd like to finish up this weekend. One of those projects is writing lists of all the projects I'd like to finish up this summer. It's finally time to start a New York bucket list. I'll sit outside as much as possible. I'll contemplate. I'm going to have lots of time on my hands now that I've sworn off men again.

it's not you

Just tonight I was told a relationship wasn't going to work out because I was not neurotic enough.

NOT. Not neurotic. Enough.

I've also been dumped for being too neurotic. I'm the Goldilocks of neuroses!

Other reasons I have recently been dumped: his head isn't in the right place, I have too many feelings, my sex drive is too high, he cares about me too much, we're both just too busy, relationships are supposed to be easy.

Wazzzzzzzzup, dating in New York, you're totes the best ever. Please eat these rhubarb ginger lemon muffins I just stress baked the shit out of. We can share one as you tell me all the ways in which I am failing you.

Neurotic muffins!

random act of bravery

I am of the opinion that sometimes the bravest thing you can do is cancel your plans in favour of eating leftover Thai food and watching The Bachelorette on your couch.

two things

Just this today:

And this:

Last night my coworker dreamt Glen Hansard was my boyfriend. I have no problems with this dream. I have negative problems.

Happy weekend, y'all.

YES HE DID.

in civilized society

Only a heathen would fail to match her manicure to her reading material.

This is an odd duck, this book. I haven't puzzled it out yet. It does make for solid subway fare, however, which is good, because I was running out of ways to hide the cover of A Clash of Kings (folding the book in two, hiding it under my coat, sticking it in my bag and peering in like I was searching for something, something that is definitely not the second title in the Game of Thrones series).

I have this friend who is super talented in that annoying way, where you feel like you could hand him a clavichord and he'd hand you back a meticulous symphony and also, like, the woolly mammoth cubs he managed to pull from its insides, and then he'd tie the whole thing together with a performance piece about heartbreak and noodles, as he tickles the clavichord and the woolly mammoths dance - but the thing he is best at, without a doubt, is saying, "Hey, have you heard this band yet?" and then watching me fall to complete pieces over the brilliance of said band.

It's sort of like he is peering into my heart and saying, oh, look, here's what's missing. But he'd make a really funny joke about it, because also he's pretty funny.

Good thing he's not at all handsome. That'd be a little over the top.

So, via my friend, here's the best new thing:
